Project Registration

How to register a project at BCO-DMO

What is an NSF Project?

  • A project oversees a collection of one or more datasets.

  • A project may or may not be part of a larger program.

  • There is most often one project per NSF award, with the exception of Collaborative Research awards where one project is funded by multiple award numbers.

  • If you do not yet know the NSF award number (e.g. if your proposal has been recommended for funding), please provide as much information as possible including the following: the project title, project start and end dates, project summary or abstract, investigator contact information, and proposal number.

  • Always include a copy of your project's Data Management Plan (DMP) when registering a project.

Steps to register a Project at BCO-DMO

1. Search BCO-DMO (either searching on project name, PI name, or award number) to see if your award is already registered. If it's not yet registered:

2. Gather the required information. For NSF-funded projects, we ask that you provide a copy of your NSF Data Management Plan as a PDF. You should also have the following information ready:

  • PI and Co-PI names, contact information, and ORCiD numbers

  • The official Project title

  • All award numbers

  • If the project has been recommended for funding but is not yet funded, please also provide a project description or summary.

3. Register your project using our online submission tool (submit.bco-dmo.org). Instructions for using the tool for project registration can be found in the "Registering a Project" section of the Submission Tool Guidance. You can expect to receive a reply within 48 hours (two business days). You can always contact us at info@bco-dmo.org with questions.

If you have trouble with the Submission Tool or don't have an ORCiD, you can register your project by email by filling out the Project Metadata Form (.rtf). The form and your DMP can then be emailed to info@bco-dmo.org.

When all info necessary for your project registration has been submitted to BCO-DMO, you will receive a project link that can be used in future reporting.

If you do not yet know the NSF award number (e.g. if your proposal has been recommended for funding), please provide as much information as possible including the following:

  • the project title,

  • project start and end dates,

  • project summary or abstract,

  • investigator contact information, and

  • proposal number.
